‘Downton Abbey’ spoilers: Rumors suggest season 6 could be the end
We’ve seen rumors like the one that we are about to report before, but this may be the time that we need to start taking them a little seriously when it comes to “Downton Abbey.”
According to the Radio Times, there are “sources” (which could be a variety of different things) within NBCUniversal who claim that creator Julian Fellowes may end the show after the sixth season, that way he can begin work on a long-awaited project for NBC entitled “The Gilded Age.” Fellowes has hinted at such talk in the past, and really, all good things must come to an end.
If this was a year or two ago, we may call hogwash on the whole thing and continue to just wait and see what happens. At this point, however, there may be a little bit of credence to some of the speculation. Why? Look at it this way. The ratings for the series are down on ITV this year, and you don’t want to get in a situation where the show starts to go out with a whimper. We also don’t want to see the series end this year either, though, given that this is a show that deserves to have a proper ending. We did not receive any indication during the filming process that they were setting up for a grand finale.
Also, this would mark a great creative challenge for Fellowes to start again with a new series, with a new cast, and in a very different market in America. We don’t really know what else he even has to conquer anymore with “Downton Abbey,” given that it is one of the most successful shows around the entire globe. He’s even getting an honorary doctorate over it.
We will have some further news on all of this soon, so be the lookout for that. You can also sign up today if you want to get some further TV updates now via our CarterMatt Newsletter.
