‘Chicago Fire’ season 3, episode 4 review: Is Taylor Kinney’s Severide on the mend?

We’ve got to be honest here. Over the course of the past two weeks on “Chicago Fire,” we’ve been extremely worried about the Kelly Severide character, and for a variety of different reasons. He had lost someone beloved in Leslie Shay, and in addition to that, he was starting to act out in way that are never good. This included drinking heavily and distancing himself from most of the rest of the firehouse.

Tonight, though, we like to think that it may have taken a near-death experience of his own to actually hit a valuable turning point. While aboard a subway, Severide witnessed a series of difficult scenarios that forced him to try to become a hero, and deal with mortality more than ever. We do feel like we had a step in the right direction here, especially when it comes to confronting hard truths about his job and his life.

Unfortunately, things were not so golden for some of the other members of the firehouse and beyond. Dawson struggled with dealing with her first fire, even if she did manage to pull through at the end. Then, she got a celebration, which was mostly just hazing that she’s going to have to deal with on the job. The only person who may have had it worse throughout all of this is Brett, who struggled after trying too hard to save one life.

This was a very good, difficult episode that at least sent us in the right direction with many characters … at least for now. Episode Grace: B.

What did you think both of tonight’s “Chicago Fire” episode, and the Severide story that was within it? Let us know some of your thoughts right now with a comment.
