‘The Originals’ season 2 spoilers: Daniel Gillies on Elijah the protector

Do you find it to be especially fun Elijah tries to look out for his family? Well, someone has to. We learned well before “The Originals” even began that Klaus was looking out primarily for Klaus, and someone else was going to have to keep him, Rebekah, and even by extension Hayley and baby Hope safe, even if not all of them are always around.

That person is Daniel Gillies, and the great news today is that he definitely appears to be ready for the challenge. In teasing the story ahead to E! News, the actor was quick to point out that there is a little bit of irony to some of what his character does, at least in that he acts so caring, but at the same time wants to destroy a few members of his family that he finds particularly harmful (especially his mother Esther):

“It’s an interesting contradiction. He’s always talking about family, family, family, but he’s really talking about the triumvirate of himself, Klaus and Rebekah, and by extension now Hayley and her child … He doesn’t want his mother, father and other brothers to come back. His mother has to be the most threatening force out of all of them and she represents a force that can end them all. Elijah’s going to be expecting a war and we can expect to learn a whole lot more about this family in the throes of that war.”

To us, what will be interesting to see from the Elijah character is just how far he allows himself to go down the rabbit hole of despair. He could end up exposing really dark sides of himself as we find out more and more about the character he has become, and what he’ll be willing to do in order to protect those he cares about. Will it be enough?
