‘Downton Abbey’ season 5: Michelle Dockery puts Mary in perspective
This season, Michelle Dockery has had a chance to perform what may be arguably one of her greatest storylines yet on “Downton Abbey,” and with that, you have to remember that there were a few moments in the past where she could have jumped ship. Many other actors who started with the show, most notably Dan Stevens and Jessica Brown Findlay, are now gone. Who knows what they could have been doing if they were still around?
Dockery is a woman, though, who has routinely said time and time again just how loyal she feels to both the ITV series, and the two the character she is playing. This is why she has asserted that she will never leave the show, even though there are more opportunities in film out there for her. (Spoilers ahead for Americans!)
In a new interview with New Zealand publication Stuff, she really goes on to elaborate specifically as to what this part means to her:
“Lady Mary has changed my life … Six years ago, I was in a very different position indeed. I feel fortunate to have been part of something so successful and something people have really taken to their hearts.
“I remember getting the script for the first audition. Actors talk and there was a real buzz around this new script by Julian Fellowes. I loved his film, Gosford Park, and Lady Mary was initially like Kristin Scott Thomas’ character in that movie. Getting the role was like a dream come true.”
Tonight, you may actually find an opportunity to find out who Mary chooses between Lord Gillingham and Charles Blake, and in addition to that, there are also big storylines ahead for Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) and Violet (Maggie Smith) as they both explore matters of the heart past and present.
