‘Downton Abbey’ season 5, episode 4 spoilers: Michelle Dockery’s Mary and more tension

While it may at first seemed as though Lady Mary had made her choice between Lord Gillingham and Charles Blake on “Downton Abbey” season 5, we are starting to once again wonder if that is really the case. After all, some brand-new photos from this weekend’s new episode give us a reason to pause. (Warning: Spoilers ahead for Americans!)

With this one, for example, it seems like Michelle Dockery and Tom Cullen’s characters are engaged in what is a very intense moment between the two of them. Are they in the middle of a dispute? If nothing else, we do wonder whether or not the couple is facing turmoil after that trip to Liverpool. The whole purpose of the trip was going to be for Mary to see whether or not Gillingham was right for her, even if it did include some unconventional methods in the process for that time being.

Charles Blake’s story is also not done on the series yet, and there may still be a reason to think that he could be the one for her. After all, just remember this: He is a man who is extremely challenging, and there may be something within this that could be appealing to Mary. He is not a yes-man, and he does not identify first and foremost with being a part of nobility. He wants to earn his own way in the world.

It may be the end of the season at this point before the choice is clear, but it does at least appear like there will be a choice.
