‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 7, episode 5 review: Gemma and Juice go to a darker place

The latest -Is Juice going to be the one to do Gemma in? The thought of that surprises us. We feel like if anyone is going to do away with the powerful matriarch at the center of “Sons of Anarchy,” it would be Jax.

Nonetheless, this is the bizarre, precarious position that we find ourselves in after Tuesday night’s “Some Strange Eruption,” which featured a plan by Katey Sagal’s character that went completely awry. Knowing who Juice is, she tried to usher him away from Charming, where she would then figure out just what to do with him. Unfortunately for her, Juice was smart enough to figure this one, and to turn some weaponry around on her.

We still feel like it’s not Gemma’s time just yet, but the question is how she ropes her way out of what may be the worst position for her yet.

Elsewhere this week, Jax continued his own reign of terror, but for the most part, nobody significant died. He and Lin fought about whether or not he really killed Tara. Admittedly, Jax’s story tonight was not our favorite, and we feel like the “waiting for the other shoe to drop” moment is almost taking too long, especially since these episodes are longer than your typical hour. We feel the same way with Nero, who seems to finally have come closer to picking a side.

Strangely, our favorite character these days is Althea Jarry, mostly because she is such an enigma. Are her feelings for Chibs genuine? To an extent, it really seems like it. We just haven’t seen a cop quite like her in Charming; we do think that she wants law and order, but she is certainly willing to take unconventional roads to making it happen.

The deaths this week were pretty inconsequential, and while we enjoyed the intensity of Gemma, Unser, and Juice, the show needs something more right now to really get us psyched. That cliffhanger was a nice start. Grade: B.
