‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 7 Katey Sagal on (eventually) saying goodbye to Gemma
All things must end, and in a matter of weeks, “Sons of Anarchy” will be over from a production point of view. For the cast, it will be almost like saying two goodbyes. First, you have to leave behind the set, and then, there is the other goodbye that comes with the fans.
Based on what Katey Sagal is saying right now, it feels like to a certain extent she will have trouble with both of them. She spoke to Entertainment Weekly as a part of their recent cover story on the subject, and explained how it will be difficult for to leave behind what has to be one of the two defining roles of her career:
”It will be hard to leave her … I would have to remind myself [throughout the process with creator Kurt Sutter], ‘Oh, these aren’t real people. He’s making them up.’ We came to it with an entire history of where they’ve been and why they are here now. And he did it with every single character—every single character has a life before scene one, episode one.”
That is one of the many reasons why this show is so unique, and why so many feel particularly connected to these characters. They are different than any other on TV. They are not intentionally good or intentionally bad; instead, they just exist as they would given their circumstances. While Gemma has evil tendencies and is a cold-blooded murderer, there is also a part of herself that justifies these unspeakable actions. Her character may be one of the most complex on the entire show, and she is not even the lead.
To think, we are probably only going to get even more nostalgic as this final ride comes closer and closer to the end.
