ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 4, episode 2 review: Fitz’s State of the Union, state of Olivia

Fitz -Tonight’s “Scandal” season 4 episode was all about an event that happens for every single President: The State of the Union Address. For Fitzgerald Grant, he had to figure out how to make a proper address in the time of unspeakable grief.

The chain of unfortunate events started when someone snapped a photo of her sitting outside her son’s grave. This led to public questions about whether or not she was okay, and it took a last-second move by Abby to ensure that she ever showed up to the address here.

Still, it actually was not until Olivia Pope swooped in that the speech actually started to shift and change for Fitz. He decided that rather than avoiding the discussion of his wife, he took on the conversation full-on regardless of how difficult it was going to be. He let his wife have a moment, and then wrapped the death of his son into a speech that was all about gun control.

The speech actually was probably the right one for him to make as the President, but that does not make it any less easy as a husband. Mellie broke down after the speech is over, and the state of these two seems to be at least better than it was during the premiere.

The episode ended with what were a surprising series of hookups, regardless of it you are talking about Olivia or Cyrus, who seemed ready for a random tryst with “Michael,” only to doubt it and seemingly go for it again at the end. If only this wasn’t set to the atrocious “MacArthur Park,” it could have been even better. We still don’t get the lyrics to that.

This episode did not always make sense, and was somewhat predictable. It is still “Scandal,” though, and there were many merits just based on the performances alone.
