‘Outlander’ episode 8 (summer finale) spoilers: Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan on Claire, Jamie

Tonight, the “Outlander” midseason finale is going to be here, and we are going to see a tale primarily of a woman in Claire who continues to struggle with being married to two different men in two different times. Not only that, but her sensibilities continue to conflict against the cultural zeitgeist of 18th-century Scotland.

This is a relationship-oriented struggle that series star Caitriona Balfe previewed in a new interview with TV Guide, where she promised that she will not give her new husband Jamie a traditional relationship for the time:

“For his time he’s quite an evolved person, but he still is in the mindset of an 18th-century man … She doesn’t allow him to live under those ideas just because. She challenges him to think for himself and find his own morality and system of beliefs. That’s what makes it such a great love story — they don’t let each other rest on their laurels.”

Meanwhile, her co-star here in Sam Heughan also does his part to explain how Claire impacts his character, and makes him very different from who he originally was on the series:

“When [Jamie] meets Claire she’s this creature from another time, almost alien-like, and she has these ideals and this way of seeing things. She teaches him about … how people should be treated and he teaches her as well. They’re both very adaptable, versatile people and work well together as a team.”

One other teaser we can present for you here is that in the future, Claire’s other husband Frank is going to go on a frantic search for her, which could have some more than surprising results in the end.
