This weekend, “Saturday Night Live” will premiere featuring Chris Pratt, and we have a whole lot of confidence in this guy’s ability to succeed. He is hilarious on “Parks and Recreation,” and he also has a great movie career going right now thanks to “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
What gives this show a one-two punch, though, is that you have another star-of-the-moment on board in Ariana Grande. With “Problem,” she became one of the biggest stars of the entire summer, and she will probably give at least two big performances tonight.
The question you have to ask yourself right now is this with Ariana: Is she going to find a way to integrate herself into the rest of the show? There is potential here, if for no other reason than that she has a history doing scripted content on Nickelodeon. She knows how to make people laugh in that venue, and hopefully she will contribute to at least one sketch … at least so long as it is funny.
There are still some other major challenges coming up, with one of them being a new Weekend Update panel that is for the most part unproven with Colin Jost and Michael Che leading the way. The show needs to find a way to recover from what was a pretty weak year for them, and maybe this show will be a step in the right direction for them. However, at the same time it could just be one step down a road to disaster. We could see either scenario playing out here at the end of the day.
