‘NCIS’ season 12 spoilers: More updates on big Tony episode ‘Choke Hold’
Without even airing just yet, “Choke Hold” is set to be one of the most controversial episodes of “NCIS” season 12 for one reason and one reason only: Tony’s possible new love interest is set to make an appearance here.
While Leia Pendergast (Stephanie Jacobsen) is someone you can expect to see quite a bit of over the course of this episode, the one thing that we’d caution you to remember is that at least for the time being, this may just be a one-episode appearance. There’s no reason to think that it will last longer than one episode for now, especially after hearing that there could be many different women in Tony’s life over the course of this season.
We figure that there will be some excited to see this, and others not so much; either way, this October 14 episode is going to have more than just this one story. Just take a look at the official synopsis if you want to see more in terms of what you can expect right now:
“The Secretary of the Navy assigns the NCIS team to a joint terrorism task force after a Naval research scientist is murdered and the lead suspect is wanted by the Russian government. In order to get a jump on the case, Gibbs has DiNozzo run interference with the leader of the task force, FBI Agent Leia Pendergast.”
Given that the Russian government is involved here, one other question we could see many asking is simple enough: Could this episode be tied to the premiere story in some way? We are not ruling it out.

I’m afraid to get too excited when I see a spoiler claiming that Tony will play a significant part. I’ve naively believed them before only to discover the reality to be that Tony had a C plot that usually consisted of him being mocked and/or humiliated while Gibbs or another agent more favored by tptb, handled the exciting part of the case. I would be delighted if tptb would give Tony a real relationship – along the lines of something as thoughtfully written as Jeanne – but they’ve already changed their tune. Now we’re hearing that “Tony will be Tony” meaning frat boy serial dating, and that the team would be “commenting” – meaning making fun and mocking him. I have no faith that tptb have ANY desire to flatter or write Tony as a worthy, decent agent or human being. The usual other team members are always cast in those episodes.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Tony with another love interest, as long as they have chemistry! I would hate to think that the show runners just cut and paste any actress to try to fill the ‘Tiva’ void. If they have chemistry and the character is likable, I’d be interested in seeing what pans out, but if not, then I would prefer the show didn’t force it. That’s just bad business.
As for the Russian storyline, I would love to see that arc over the season. I love Lev Gorn – think he’s great, and adding side characters as recurring guests would really add depth and meat to the show. It’s a bit more evolved. This way, we can get introduced to new characters and watch how the NCIS team develops along with them. And who knows? Maybe Tony would end up falling for one of these characters, naturally. That would be a gift of a surprise.

The chemistry between Michael and Cote was once in a decade. There is no way they cast someone in a month with chemistry like that. Put it this way, last year they were exuberant because they “hit the lottery” and cast the most perfect new agent ever, in Bishop. We know how that turned out.
With Bishop and any new love interest, they messed it up. They predetermined that it would be perfect and didn’t test it out. How did they not learn their lesson last year? Glasberg has a terrible track record creating new characters, and Bishop is the jewel in the turd crown. Why does he think he picked a love interest that fans would accept?

I don’t want to see Tony with a new love interest. I’m sorry, I know that’s not logical. I invested 8 years in his relationship with Ziva. Has there ever been an “iconic” screen couple where one of them moved on to another relationship? ever? And yet this show slaved under the fear of the Moonlighting curse. Look, she might be a great character. I’m thrilled to see a real female agent for a change. But I have no interest in seeing Tony in a new relationship.

They weren’t a couple. They were never shown to be a couple. They were coworkers who sometimes flirted. Mostly, Ziva treated Tony like he was an inferior and disgusting germ. But since tptb seem to have absolutely no sincere inclination to give us an important, well thought out Tony arc, they are going to feature his comical and immature dating habits and then use the team making fun of his inappropriate remarks or his strike outs as comic fodder. All the while extoling the nobility and near magical bravery and heroism of super Gibbs, with his indispensable super skilled team members – McGee and Bishop. I would love to see Tony in a mostly off screen relationship in which the lady actually seemed to care about and respect Tony, but this will NEVER happen now. I would love to see the writers give Tony a well thought out crime arc that features his cleverness, bravery, and some physical danger for a change, but that will also NEVER happen now. Gibbs gets ALL of that writing and Tony is the inconsequential agent used for the comic scene.
