‘Downton Abbey’ season 5, episode 1 preview: All about the Maggie Smith story

There has been quite a bit of debate over Maggie Smith and her role on “Downton Abbey” over the years, and quite a bit of it comes down largely to one question: Is her character of the Dowager Countess really bringing enough to the table? Even though she has scored many an Emmy nomination for the role, and also taken home numerous trophies, we cannot really sit here and point to anything that outstanding that the character has done since the second season that stands out.

While the attached photo above from Sunday’s season 5 premiere may not be a huge giveaway on any particular thing, but we have it on good authority that the Dowager is set for her best season in a long time, and she will have quite a few interesting developments. Will it include romance for her? We wouldn’t rule that out, but there are a number of different possibilities that could be explored. She has already done a remarkable job representing the notion that no matter your age, you can be someone who can be a mover and a shaker. She is one of the most valuable sources of wisdom for everyone at Downton.

Now, let’s just hope that Maggie still wants to be a part of the show for a while moving forward. Out of all the cast members, she has always been the one who is the most coy about her future. She takes it often year by year, and she can really afford to since she is of that pedigree.
