‘Downton Abbey’ season 5, episode 1 preview: Talking Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle plots
While Jim Carter and Brendan Coyle may not typically be the “Downton Abbey” actors with the largest amount of conversation to their names, the two are going to be focal points in the story just as much moving forward as anyone else.
We start here with Coyle’s Bates, and the photo attached here from the season 5 premiere shows yet again that this is a man very much focused, and equally intense. We still don’t have 100% confirmation that he murdered Mr. Green, but he clearly did it. The only thing that’s missing is the conservatory and the candlestick. For this season, the question for Bates should be whether or not he can put this past behind him, and if he will really be able to get away with this crime as easily as he hopes that he did.
As for Carter’s Mr. Carson, we may be more interested in this storyline than almost any other on the series, mostly because we ‘ship him with Mrs. Hughes with a fiery passion. There are so few romantic storylines out there for older characters that there were would be something beautiful in seeing these two friends find something more, and for Carson to finally let down some of his walls. The world is changing, and we are more than fine if he starts to finally be okay with that. He can also still be the same strict man he always has while also still finding love … right? We like to think that one is not necessarily tied to the other.
