‘Hell on Wheels’ season 4, episode 7 preview: Can Cullen bring the real Elam back?
There is a strange feeling in our stomach going into Saturday’s “Hell on Wheels” episode. Even before it was confirmed, we were fairly certain that Elam was going to return this season following the bear attack. It just felt like too big of a waste to get rid of Common’s character with something that was this out of left field.
With that being said, we are extremely worried for him now. The episode’s title is “Elam Ferguson,” which could mean something pretty bad is about to happen to him. He has abandoned most of what made him Elam in the first place, and as a result of the injuries he suffered in the attack, bought into the notion that he has been reborn as this sort of invulnerable bear-creature. That is bad news for him mentally, and potentially bad news for him physically.
Upon first seeing Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) in the sneak peek below, Elam does not have the reaction that we were hoping for, and Cullen realizes not too long after that he has his work cut out for him. If things get out of hand and Elam starts to act dangerously, then his friend may have no choice other than to murder him. This may be one of the hardest pills to swallow of the entire series if it happens, but it would certainly be an impactful end to the Elam story.
For now, though, we’re going to hold out hope that Cullen or Eva will be able to get to Elam and help him remember the person that he once was. These two are really the best hope that he has.
