‘Hell on Wheels’ season 4, episode 7 preview: What lies ahead for Elam Ferguson?
Tonight, “Hell on Wheels” aired an episode in “Bear Man” that may very well be one of the most unique ones that they have ever created. There was very little English dialogue, a singular focus on the Elam character, and a story that was isolated, yet quiet and beautiful.
So where can the series go from here? We’re going to find out very soon in an episode that is entitled “Elam Ferguson.” This will continue his story, but also bring him into contact with most of the beloved characters on the show.
If you want some further details right now, then just look (per TV Guide) at the attached synopsis:
“Cullen attempts to reconnect with Elam upon his return. Meanwhile, Durant takes matters into his own hands while putting an old problem to rest.”
We suppose that for now, the biggest question mark in this episode will be if Elam really can ingratiate himself with the railroad crew again after all that has happened. Remember here that it is not like everyone else has remained constant in his absence. Cullen Bohannon is now married and has a child, while John Campbell is holding court in the town of Cheyenne. Even Durant no longer has the power that he once did, and these changes may make this entire town feel completely foreign to him.
Given that we are now just about at the half point of the season, we only imagine that the story will build in intensity here on out. Also, it could build in violence based on what Elam’s reaction was to seeing Cullen and company in the promo that aired after the hour was over.

It looks grim for Elam in Cheyenne. The preview at the end of Ep 406 shows Cullen standing by Elam with Naomi yelling for him to get out of danger. The most we can hope for is that Elam does not carry out further acts of violence, is given medical treatment and is allowed to live. Almost under the radar was a scene in the episode before this one, “Reckoning,” in which Thomas”:Doc” Durant tells Campbell that he’s an ophthalmologist by education and training. Perhaps he can help save Elam’s injured eye..I am hoping Elam stays in HoW. Love Common’s portrayal, whether the old or the new Elam.

Out of his mind, and angry… he will be a moving target in Cheyenne at this point. If he doesn’t recognize Eva then he should return to the Indians and be Bear Killer for sure.

I would love to see Elam recover but realistically, he suffered a major brain injury.
His propensity for violence and lack of self control is off the chart.
There is no place for him in Cheyenne or with the railroad while he’s like this.
Even today there is no coming back from this type of head trauma.
I hope he is sent to a hospital or sanitarium but I fear it is more likely that he’ll be killed :(
