Potential ‘Supergirl’ series reportedly not going to CW; sad news for ‘Arrow,’ ‘The Flash’ fans?

It looks like if there is a “Supergirl” series on the air, it is not going to be joining the larger superhero universe established on The CW by “Arrow” and “The Flash.”

Per a new report from E! News, this project was originally pitched to the network, but it did not land there, and is instead being considered now by some other networks. Why wouldn’t The CW reportedly want the show? It may just be a case of there being too many cooks in the kitchen. The network has shifted away from being more of the “Gossip Girl” network to really emphasizing all sorts of genre programming, especially in the science fiction / fantasy realms. This is why William Shatner seems to love them so much right now, since they are keeping these forms of programming alive. Adding another superhero show could reduce the number of other slots that they have, and given that they don’t even know how “The Flash” will do, it may be a bridge too far for them.

With that being said, just think about how confusing the DC television universe could be if these shows end up being ordered. You’ll have one universe with “Arrow” and “The Flash,” then another with “Gotham,” another with “Constantine,” one with “iZombie,” and then potentially one here. If you do not use the same characters on different shows, eventually you may be limiting all of them to a certain degree. Plus, you have to remember here the DC cinematic universe that has been set up here over time.

The sound you are currently hearing is Geoff Johns’ head exploding.
