Could a ‘Supergirl’ TV series really happen? It’s possible…

There is no mistaking that superheroes are extremely popular right now in the TV game, and they really weren’t for a while. But, “Arrow” has shown that you can make an original comic adaptation successful, and with “Agents of SHIELD” and the upcoming “Arrow” spin-off “The Flash,” more are seemingly coming into the game.

So could Supergirl really be the next hero to come to the small screen? This is an interesting rumor that is at least worth discussion. Bleeding Cool cites sources saying that writer / producer Michael Green (who has worked on many comic adaptations, including “Smallville”) is working on a prospective project about the character.

Could this really work? We feel like if the rumors are true, it could. “Lucy,” “Divergent,” and “The Hunger Games” have all shown that there is a market now for action-oriented projects with female leads, and this is a popular character not being used in the DC Comics films right now.

Granted, there is the Laura Vandervoot debate that will surely rage here. The actress was Supergirl on “Smallville,” and more recently has been attached to the series “Bitten.” We understand the temptation to want to ultimately cast her, and we’d be okay if they did. However, we all thought the same thing about Justin Hartley and “Arrow,” and Stephen Amell has proven himself to be more than capable as Oliver Queen.

We’ll have to see if anything comes of this, but we will say for now that we do very much want to see a female-fronted comic-book show in the near future. We suppose you can count “Agent Carter” as one, but she is not a hero in the same sort of way.
