‘The X Factor’ UK spoilers: Harry Styles’ cousin auditions as part of band

What is it about relatives of famous people on “The X Factor” this year? Robert Pattinson’s sister is someone who has already received plenty of attention, and now, the cousin of One Direction member Harry Styles is getting the same sort of thing.

According to a report from the Mirror, Ben Selley is one of the hopefuls alongside Karim Newton, Matt Goodenough, Nathan Gittens and Scott Dicks in the group Concept hoping to make a splash on the British talent competition this year. They are described as a more rock-oriented version of One Direction, and have impressed so far in the competition.

What is interesting about this group, though, is that they have been actively trying to distance themselves from the Harry comparisons. A source claims that Selley has not brought up his famous family ties much at all during the audition process, and is looking more to make it through on the merits of their talent itself.

Then again, you could argue that being a cousin is not really the sort of huge family relation that makes for a great story on the show, anyway. Some cousins rarely spend any time together at all. Therefore, he would have looked incredibly conceited and not at all like an interesting, humble person had he come out on the show constantly dropping Harry’s name and saying that he deserved stardom based on that and that alone. In the end, he is probably making the right move here.
