FXX winning big already with ‘Every Simpsons Ever’ marathon
This week, FXX decided to go ahead and do something that was in one way completely crazy, but in another completely revolutionary: They opted to air every single episode of “The Simpsons” in a row for well more than a week as a way to launch into being the first cable network ever to have the show in syndication.
So far, this “Every Simpsons Ever” marathon is already paying big dividends, and giving the network the sort of success they haven’t had in their short lifespan. Thursday’s beginning to the marathon was the most-watched day in FXX history, and the ratings on average (at least in total viewers) were more than 500% better than they were for the network at any point to date. (This is based on the average ratings for every other day in history.) The news is just as good in the demo, which is proof that many viewers are coming to check out episodes that they probably don’t even remember from their childhood.
In a statement Chuck Saftler, President of Program Strategy and COO of FX Networks, was of course pleased with the results:
“We knew that The Simpsons could be transformative for FXX and its performance yesterday truly exceeded our wildest expectations … It is a testament to the power of one of the greatest shows in television history and the genius of Jim Brooks, Matt Groening, Al Jean and everyone associated with the show. Their support of our launch has been invaluable. We’re off to a great start, we still have 11 days of binging left in our record-breaking marathon, and many years of The Simpsons to come on FXX. WOO HOO!”
Who would have thought that shows more than 25 years old would be so well received now? It’s crazy, but “The Simpsons” really are that much of an empire.
