‘Mad Men’ season 7: Matthew Weiner on censorship, music, and more
If you love “Mad Men,” one of the coolest things that we have seen this week is a Reddit AMA featuring the show’s creator Matthew Weiner. He has been on a tour promoting his upcoming film “Are You Here,” and this has led to all sorts of interesting conversation.
One of the most interesting quotes to us that came out of this AMA was why Weiner was grateful to have his show on AMC versus HBO or another premium cable network, mostly because this forced him more to operate within certain guidelines versus doing whatever he wanted:
“HBO has an insatiable appetite for nakedness and violence so there would have been a lot more of that. That may sound like a missed opportunity for some people but I have enjoyed the restrictions of basic cable. I think it has made the show strangely more sexy by implication and it was never going to be violent. The hero takes a nap in the first 15 minutes of the pilot.”
Weiner also went fairly in-depth here on the subject of what were some of his favorite pieces of music that he has incorporated into the show at some point:
“[Every] song is there for a reason and some are more emotional to me than others. I write to music and I even had a file in my iTunes for years filled with songs that I hoped I would be able to use in my then non-existant TV show. Off the top of my head, ‘You Only Live Twice’ was something that i considered for the pilot and eventually constructed an entire season around (Season 5). So that is a big one. I also still have strong feelings about ‘On The Street Where You Live’ in the pilot and ‘Where is Love’ in ‘The Gypsy and the Hobo’. Oh! I almost forgot, I once saw Nellie McKay play ‘Christmas Waltz’ on a ukulele and that inspired the whole episode of that name.”
We’re going to miss “Mad Men,” mostly because we can tell that there was care put into every single move … even some of the ones that we disagree with.
