‘The Newsroom’ season 3 spoilers: Jeff Daniels on looking back at Will McAvoy
Even though “The Newsroom” has not yet aired its final season on HBO, production is already over for Jeff Daniels and the cast. Thanks to that, they are able to take an interesting position looking back at their time on the series, even while everyone else is looking forward to it.
In the time between wrapping the show and preparing to do his new movie “Dumb and Dumber To,” Jeff Daniels has been on a music tour across Michigan and a few other venues with the Ben Daniels band, and this did allow for him to chat a little about the show in the process. Speaking to MLive, for example, he explained whether or not he is going to miss playing this character:
“Yes and no … I didn’t do it for 8 years. I did it for 3. And I’m from the world of, close the play and move on. … With everything, you know it’s ending at some point, and there’s a sense of relief in a job well done, past tense. I told Aaron (Sorkin) that. Having that sense of, you can’t do anything more than you did with it. … The goal for me is always, ‘Is the performance definitive? Can you imagine anyone else in the role?’ And I feel successful in coming close to that.”
We will say that there is nobody else who could play the Will character quite like Daniels did, and we’re thrilled that we got the chance to see him for as long as we have. Does a part of us wish that he could have had six years like “True Blood” did over on HBO? Sure, but we’ll be grateful for three, especially if the next one is the best one yet.
