‘Under the Dome’ season 2, episode 8 review: Barbie’s warning to Julia
We have not made it a secret here at CarterMatt that this season of “Under the Dome” hasn’t met with our high expectations. The first season was exciting and full of drama, but this season has felt a little scattered and they don’t seem to know what to do with Big Jim’s character. Give the man a solid story line already!
Big Jim has basically appointed himself the sheriff of the town and is back on the “I’m a good guy” train after breaking into Rebecca’s house and threatening her last week. Big Jim’s put to work right away – someone has pulled down the windmill and a car has been set on fire under a billboard of Big Jim making him think that he is a target. So is someone coming after Big Jim? Looks like Phil is the man behind it all and he wants vengeance for being lied to and shot at for Big Jim. So has Big Jim turned things around? Well he had a chance to kill Phil, and instead put him in jail.
Barbie’s dad is still working on trying to get him back to the dome, but in the meantime he tells Barbie that he can get an email to Julia asking her to “take a leap of faith” and hoping she will get the message to jump off the cliff to meet with him.
Barbie’s email makes it to her, but it’s not the message that he wrote. This one includes a sentence that tells Julia to “bring the egg with her.” Clearly Barbie’s father is using him to get to the egg and Julia is suspicious of the email.
A hacker named Hunter (friend or foe?) meets Barbie and tells him that his father doctored the email and told Julia to bring the egg. He tells him not to trust his father and hacks into his father’s computer to prove to him (and the world) that not everything his father says is true. After showing Barbie the real email his father sent him, the hacker steals everything off his computer.
Barbie learns that his father’s company was originally hired to do surveillance on the dome for radiation and came across a way to send emails, but didn’t share the information with the government. While giving Barbie the tour he runs into Hunter, who works for his father.
Barbie is able to send another email to Julia and she realizes that it’s actually him, but he doesn’t talk about bringing the egg, and instead asks to meet her at the edge of the dome. Surpassing many of the difficulties to get to the meeting spot at the dome Barbie ends up tripping a silent alarm. Julia gets to see Barbie for a few seconds before the army nabs him and he tells her that it’s not safe outside the dome, but doesn’t get to tell her not to jump from the cliff to be with him before he’s taken away. Also Big Jim sees the whole exchange and now knows that Barbie’s alive and Julia’s been lying to him.
Things are picking up a bit with this episode now that we are learning a bit more about what’s really going on outside the dome. We still feel that Big Jim doesn’t have enough to do and this “I’m a good guy/I’m a bad guy” storyline is getting old. Episode grade: C
