‘Mad Men’ season 7: Matthew Weiner on the difficulties with closure
At this time next year, we will all be sitting here looking back on “Mad Men,” and the journey that was … and what a journey it was in so many ways. While it still has to stick the landing in order to be regarded as one of the greatest TV shows of all time, it is at least close to being there right now.
As you would imagine, though, saying goodbye to a project like this would be difficult for Matthew Weiner. This show has been in his life consistently for a decade now when you think about developing the pilot, and also that lengthy hiatus between seasons 4 and 5. He is in the world of film now with “Are You Here,” and doing the two projects has caused him to spend some time reflecting on endings, and how creating one for a show is so difficult after everything that you have put into it.
Speaking about this subject to the Los Angeles Times (which is mostly an interview about the film), just take a look at what Weiner has to say:
“Ending the series — which now I’ve done at least on paper, I haven’t finished editing the last episode — it was a total revelation to me … This is not part of writing TV, resolving things. You are propelling yourself into next season, the next episode. You can kill a character off or have someone leave the show, but it isn’t the same as ending the entire thing.”
The series will return to AMC in the spring, and for us, we don’t expect complete closure with the series finale or to have Don Draper figured himself out. We just want him in a position where he can see into his future, and where we feel like enough of his story has been told to be satisfied. We feel like anyone who sets the bar of expectation too high for such a thing is going to be disappointed.
