‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 6: Could either Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, or Nina Dobrev leave?
Are we near the end of the road for at least one star of “The Vampire Diaries“? that may be a sad thing to think about right now, but it is a reality based on the contract situation.
When the show’s primary cast joined the CW series, they did so for six years. This is the standard length of a primetime contract for any major network. Sometimes there are options that can be held by the production company for another season, but that is not entirely what is happening here at the moment.
Per E! News, two out of the primary three stars for this show (Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, and Nina Dobrev) have already agreed to return for another year. However, there is still one other person holding out and trying to decide.
From our standpoint, if that person is Dobrev, the show may as well end. It is hard to imagine “The Vampire Diaries” without Elena at the center of it, since the story is told primarily through her. Maybe it could be Caroline’s “Vampire Diaries” after that, but the show still wouldn’t quite feel right.
Still, we could imagine a version of this show going without either Damon or Stefan Salvatore … even if it wouldn’t be the same, and you run the risk of upsetting / alienating a fanbase who may not all understand that an actor wants to leave to do other things. If someone exits the show, it will not be because the producers wanted to write them out; instead, it will be because this is what they wanted.
