‘Girl Meets World’ episode 7 review: Minkus’ return and Maya’s mother
The journey of “Girl Meets World” through its first few episodes on the air has been a mixed one. There have been moments and episodes where we’ve found ourselves very much enjoying the journey of Riley and some of these other characters, while at the same time there have been others where we have started to get a little loopy over some of the over-sentimentality that the show tends to throw at us.
To be honest, we’re still not sold on Lucas a character, and the only other children who are particularly interesting are Auggie, Maya, Riley, and Farkle. What made “Girl Meets Maya’s Mother” Friday night entertaining were the two adults who burst onto the scene … starting with Minkus.
First of all, it’s nice to see that the rivalry when it comes to Topanga has not slowed down despite all of the time that the characters have been off of TV, and it was especially enjoyable seeing just how well the introduction was made here for new fans. You didn’t need to know about anything that happened in the past to appreciate what was going on here.
Meanwhile, Maya’s mother was quite frankly a trip as we started to get a sense as to why her home life was complicated. This woman is a waitress / aspiring “actress,” and isn’t ever really there for her daughter. We appreciated that she didn’t entirely change over the course of the episode to the point where she was a big presence at Maya’s art show, but the show still found a way to inject some happiness there without her.
Ultimately, this was a nice story to close off the first part of the season. We laughed a little more in this episode than we have in others, while we also feel like it worked harder to be realistic rather than just tie all stories up in a neat little bow at the end. “Girl Meets World” is still new to TV, but it is maturing quickly. Grade: B+.

I thought it was a very good episode and agree that the two new adults added a lot to it.
You have to remember though that this is sort of set to make a point to the middle schoolers and in that age range.
Think about how many Mayas are out there in single parent homes, are living in foster homes and so forth. They would love for a parent to come a ballgame or a show but they know it won’t happen no matter how much they wish it would. Yes, a parent seems to always use work as avoiding going to something like that.
