‘Last Comic Standing’ finale rankings: Will Lachlan Patterson, Nikki Carr, or Rod Man win?
Tomorrow night, we’re prepared to say goodbye to the fun “Last Comic Standing” for a year … though we are very much pleased about the fact that we don’t have to go into this thinking it is the last episode ever. (There have been many others seasons where we’ve wondered this.) NBC has already renewed the show, which is good news for other talented comics out there.
For now, though, let’s focus in on trying to answer this one question: Who is the best of this season, and worthy of an NBC development deal? You have to consider more than just the quality of the joke; point of view, personality, and creativity all come into the equation. If one of these people is ever going to star or appear on a show, they need to stand out to appeal to viewers who are not just watching this show. There is a clear winner in our head, but the judges may or may not agree.
3. Lachlan Patterson – Lachlan is the odd man out, a very funny comedian who seems better suited to be a comic than the star of a show. He reminds us a little of a less-extreme Anthony Jeselnik, who is more observational and less personal with their humor. This can work for TV (see Seinfeld, obviously), but we don’t see that same personal spark here. He’s very funny, but unlikely to win.
2. Nikki Carr – The gap between #2 and #1 has shortened throughout the season, especially as Joe Machi started to struggle with his identity on stage. The truth is that we could see Nikki either as a lead or a supporting character on a show. Heck, we could see her and Rod Man on a show together as crazy characters. The main reason for this ranking is that we would say that across every set this season and even some challenges, he’s been just a little bit funnier. But, comedy is subjective.
1. Rod Man – To us, Rod Man is a clear winner because we’ve never seen a comic quite like him, who can make the mundane hilarious with just the inflection of his voice. We do see the Seinfeld spark here, but we would also understand some Bernie Mac comparisons, as well. He’s just pure comedy, and while you know that he’s worked on these sets for years, they still feel effortless.
