‘Downton Abbey’ season 5 spoilers: Meet the new Mary, same as the old Mary

Take a look -If only The Who existed during the time of “Downton Abbey,” then they would be able to get that reference. Regardless, we’re here to report some good news via Michelle Dockery about her famous character. If you liked her demeanor for most of the first few seasons and hated her last year, you’ll be pleased to know that personality-wise, the version of the role that you long loved is back!

This announcement first came out courtesy of Dockery’s chat with E! News, where she uses a very fitting word to describe the character’s often-sarcastic and cynical demeanor:

“She’s very much out of mourning by series five. For me, it’s like a new Mary … She’s got her spirit back…she’s got her bite back.”

We feel like season 5 will be a great one for Mary, mostly because it’s one that for the first time in forever will not be entirely steeped in tragedy. She has a chance to demonstrate and show personal growth, and also surround herself with people who she genuinely wants in her life moving forward.

Two of those people, of course, may be Tony Gillingham and Charles Blake. While we do know that she will make her choice at some point before season 5 comes to a close, there is no reason to think that it will come immediately. Mary may enjoy the opportunity to actually think with a clear head, and then make a decision based on that. Isn’t that the right way to choose who you want to spend the rest of your life with, after all?
