‘Rising Star’ quarterfinals: Did Jesse Kinch, Austin French advance again?
Another new episode of “Rising Star” aired on ABC Sunday night, and there was some very good news: It ran for only an hour! We mean that as partially a slam of this very-formulaic show, but also as a chance to celebrate the fact that there was an episode with very little filler built into it.
With that being said, there were some reminders in here that just one bad week can really sink you in this competition. There is no resting on your laurels and hoping a fan base will vote you back for another round later. Just ask April Lockhart, who despite her great story, sunk to the bottom tonight thanks to a bad song choice in “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”
Another interesting surprise that came out of the show tonight was learning that longtime favorite Jesse Kinch was actually not #1 for the entire night. Instead, that honor went to Austin French with an 89% to his 88%. There’s finally a competition! These two and Audrey Kate Geiger (85%) are easily the three best on this competition, and we’d be more than happy if they went ahead and cut all of the others right now. It’d at least give us more guaranteed great performances the next couple of weeks. Also, maybe it would help some talent scouts recognize that there are some genuinely good people on this show.
Unfortunately, the biggest problem with “Rising Star” is still that the majority of the contestants are not that phenomenal, and there’s also the issue of Kesha seemingly loving and supporting every singer person who comes on stage.

Austin was amazing. Jesse was great but sang with little to no passion almost like he knew he was the winner. Hmmm don’t count out Audrey either! Austin won tonight loved his song choice!
