‘Downton Abbey’ season 5 spoilers: Will the Christmas special actually be set at Christmas?
The title for this particular “Downton Abbey” article probably sounds rather strange, but for the uninitiated when it comes to this show, it is actually pretty valid. The past two Christmas specials for the series have not actually been set around Christmastime, with the largest reason for it being that the show airs this special at different times of the year around the world, and it is not exactly Christmas for most of them.
However, this year we can at least say that the series is setting things around winter. There has been snow brought in for some of the filming locations, and there will most-likely be some more wintry effects added after the fact in post-production. We’re wary about saying a whole lot more than this, largely for the simple reason that spoiling everything is no fun.
Still, it’s nice to see that the show is reminding us about this part of the year again, given that they do not often do it for a variety of reasons … with the biggest one being that the series doesn’t really film much in the winter. Production starts typically around the time when there may be some real snow on the ground, but for the most part, it takes place during the spring and summer months and it becomes expensive to bring in a bunch of snow and effects to paint that picture. It’s so easy, especially with this show, to excuse the fact that we rarely see the cooler months with time jumps.

I would love to see a real Christmas themed show. It doesn’t matter when it shown around the world. Christmas at Downton – a spectacular event!
