‘Hell on Wheels’ season 4, episode 2 preview: Durant meets John Campbell

What's next? -Based on what we’ve seen now in the sneak peek from Saturday’s “Hell on Wheels” episode, it looks like Durant is not going to have a friend at all in newcomer John Campbell. As a matter of fact, it looks like these two are going to have plenty of reasons to despise each other.

It’s probably easiest to sum up their dynamic like this: John wants to bring his own brand of law and order to the territory under order from the east, which is not something that Durant is interested in at all. Not only that, but Campbell wants the land necessary to build a police station, a courthouse, and other important buildings, and wants this basically handed right to him. Otherwise, Durant runs the risk of being taxed through the nose.

The options that the character has right now are interesting. Either he can just give in to Campbell (not likely, considering what we know about the guy), try to fight him using words, or just kill Campbell and hope that it takes a while for Washington to send someone else in this direction. Unfortunately for Durant, though, he’s going to have to realize that there is only so much that he can do to stop the tide of history. This is eventually going to be a problem that he has to deal with, and the larger question for now is if he wants to deal with it from John or someone else.
