‘The Amazing Race Canada 2’ episode 5 review: Who was off-target in the Yukon?
Tonight on “The Amazing Race Canada,” we saw the show venture pretty darn far away from Macau, where they were last week. We can only imagine that plane ride up to the Yukon, let alone the jet leg that came along with it.
What was the biggest surprise of all was that for the first time all race, someone other than Natalie & Meghan came in first place. These two are clearly still in the driver’s seas, since a third-place finish is not exactly shabby in its own right; still, we did at least learn through this that they are somewhat vulnerable. Alain & Audrey got the advantage mostly because of a Roadblock themed around shooting accuracy, and apparently Alain is actually Jason Bourne in disguise. Seriously. This was the sort of game-changing Roadblock that really shifts the entire control of the leg.
Thanks to this skill-based task, we really did have a situation here where the earlier Detour of camping equipment versus dog sledding really didn’t matter. It was still fun to see, though, if only for the judge who appeared to be so nice at the tents, only to turn cruel in a split-second if you didn’t do it correctly. The other task tonight was the obvious Silverado product placement that almost felt like the show’s version of one of those annoying BuzzFeed lists that are obviously sponsored. No fun there.
The plus about this episode was strictly that the scenery was beautiful. The negative here was that the ultimate elimination was extremely sad, and also extremely predictable. Nicole sat there and continued to shoot time and time again until she found the energy to make it through … but that still wasn’t enough. We loved her dedication, even if it was obvious that she was in last place.
Their struggles in the end managed to bail out the entertaining trainwreck that is Rex & Bob, who are somehow still competing in this race. Also still here somehow are Sukhi & Jinder, who at least did well enough in the Roadblock to make up for the variety of other blunders. Episode Grade: B-.
