‘The Leftovers’ episode 6 review: Taking away Nora Durst’s pain

Watching “The Leftovers” at times feels like you are watching a series of vignettes, which each one of them possessing a different take on the same thing: There are no answers for the future, and you just have to find a way to live in the now.

Carrie Coon dominated Sunday’s episode “Guest” with a fantastic take on Nora Durst, the wife and mother who lost everything in the wake of the departure. Yet, it wasn’t just this that she viewed as the cause of her pain; it was also the infidelity that occurred near the end, and the fact that she just couldn’t let go of anything that happened to her.

Somehow, this journey for her tonight eventually caused her to nearly get tossed out of her hotel after someone stole her name, and she received no solace at all from being a panelist, or being around other people wanting to ask questions about the future. She only seemed remotely happy when she started to let go, but for the first time, that was just about the drugs.

For the second time, though, she had some help (and $1,000) for getting herself in the position where she could finally start to feel that way. Her definition of not feeling pain anymore was in the end saying yes to a date with Kevin.

When it comes to events that took place here, the story was remarkably straightforward. What made “The Leftovers” shine so much to us was the feeling. We’re talking about what it must have felt like to go from constant suffering to even just a glimmer of hope, and when your credentials mean nothing, regardless of it you are a legacy three times over or a guest. We felt and enjoyed everything in this episode, even if we still are perplexed as ever about the direction of the show. Grade: A-.
