‘Rising Star’ review: Jesse Kinch, Joshua Peavy, Aubrey Kate Geiger, and the top 13
We want to sit here and say that we were thoroughly impressed by tonight’s episode of “Rising Star,” but we weren’t. It was the Top 13 performance show, but there were at least a few performers in here who wouldn’t have made it out of the first round of a lesser singing show.
Just think about this for a minute. We had a woman who only got the approval of 32% tonight. Seriously! This show has only a tiny percentage of great contestants … and the only thing that makes this worse from an entertainment perspective is that we could not watch the rest of the season and know that Jesse Kinch is going to win in the end. The winner at this point is obvious beyond words.
We at least give Brad Paisley, Josh Groban, Ludacris, and to a certain extent Kesha credit for showing up right now, given that they are all famous and self-aware enough right now to know that they are sitting on board what is effectively a sinking ship. The ratings are terrible, the quality isn’t good, and Groban can only do so much. We knew this when we saw multiple performers come on tonight with scores that would have counted for bad auditions.
We suppose that we’ll keep on watching “Rising Star” to see Jesse, Jordan Peavy, Audrey Kate Geiger, and the few others who could have done better on a different show. It’s just unfortunate that they are all stuck on this one instead. The biggest problem? For a show with “Star” in the title, few people have the attitude that shows they are ready to be one. Grade: D-.

Jesse and Austin both amazing singers. It will be interesting to see if the under dog Austin could pull out a victory over the popular Jesse.

Jesse Kinch is my cousin and he really tore it up… again. Only he and the newlywed Austin French have a shot to win this one. Go Jesse! You’re the best thing about this show.

Without checking I am not sure whether Jesse Kinch is the long-haired rocker or the newlywed. But I did notice that out of 13 contestants, 3 were male and they ended up 1,2,3.
I am personally rooting for the singer from New Jersey who’s back story was that she was a surfer when she was younger and I think her father had been in a band.

When I saw Audrey Kate Geiger on July 27, I thought she was a cinch for
being in the final four. After this last performance, I thinkshe is
lucky ot still be in the competition. Her July performance wasn’t
perfect, but it was near-perfect. She had the right kind of stage
presence and gestures, and just the right amount of nasality and New
Jersey accent in her singing that made her different from any popular
singer today, And her choice of songs was great.
However, this
week, everything dropped a notch or two in every area. If she cannot
recapture that spark from the performance on the 27th, she might not
even make it into the finals.
I couldn’t help but notice that
the judges were all very late in placing their votes and, just seconds
before the deadline, Brad Paisley went over to Ludacris. I don’t know
what that was all about but, after Paisley talked to him, Ludacris
punched his button with an up arrow. Without help from the judges, she
would have gone home last night.
She’s still my favorite, and she
should have a great career ahead of her, but I don’t see how she can
overcome Jesse Kinch, especially if she doesn’t go back to emphasizing
her strengths that were largely missing last night. If she doesn’t,
then Kinch is a cinch. If she does, a lot of people who have been
voting for some of the eliminated contestants may start voting for her
and make it a real contest.

Yeah, my guess would be that Paisley whispered to Ludacris “If you don’t vote yes she will go home”. Or maybe he said “If you vote yes I promise to vote yes for someone you like in the future”. She ended up with 65% and Macy Cate had 60% so they would have had to “go to the decimals” to see who stayed had Ludacris not voted yes.
Ultimately, I wish the judges had no votes. Or give them 1%, that is still a lot more than I have. There have been multiple times now where the judges overruled the public.
