‘The Walking Dead’ season 5: Robert Kirkman on killing off characters, the struggle
Anytime there is a character who dies on “The Walking Dead,” it’s understandable to get a little choked up. While we’re all well aware of the fact that there are constantly bodies hitting the ground with this show, you still grow attached to the people you spend some time watching.
For the people working behind the scenes, we imagine that the emotion is multiplied many times over. These folks are your friends and colleagues, and you therefore don’t want to say goodbye to them. Unfortunately, there are still sometimes circumstances where that has to happen.
The only thing that makes this worse sometimes is that you can occasionally have to sit around with the knowledge that someone is going to be leaving the show … and you still cannot say anything about it. Just look at what executive producer / comic write Robert Kirkman said to Entertainment Weekly … at least when it comes to reasons why:
“You can’t tell ’em … Because we change our minds all the time. And that’s the other really bad thing about it. We can’t really give them that much warning because there’s always a chance that we’ll get into actually writing the scripts after we plan things out and we’re like, ‘Nope, that character’s living.’ Which has happened many times. So we don’t want to have many false news giving situations.”
We’re sure that at some point during production right now, the writers and producers of the show are going to have to be the bearer of bad news to at least a few people. Given that the second half of season 4 really did not kill that many people aside from Lizzie, it feels like the show is overdue for a jaw-dropping shocker. Could it be Glenn? We know that there were some worried after they watched the Comic-Con trailer.
The season will premiere on Sunday, October 12, so we imagine that there will be so much more we can say about lies ahead before then. Also, be sure to crawl over here to get some further updates via our newsletter.
