‘Doctor Who’ season 8: Peter Capaldi on age, disbelief in landing role
It has been extremely well-documented at this point that Peter Capaldi was a lifelong fan of “Doctor Who” before getting the opportunity to finally play The Doctor himself, but what has not been nearly as reported is the sheer surprise for him at getting this opportunity. He is coming off two younger men playing the part in David Tennant and Matt Smith, and the easy thing logically would try to get a similar guy within that demographic to step into the part now.
In a new cover story with Entertainment Weekly, Capaldi even admits that his age (56) is something that kept him from seriously believing that he’d get a call to play the part at this point:
“I wouldn’t have thought I would be the guy. I wouldn’t have thought it would be me … Because of my age. I would have thought they were automatically heading younger.”
The interesting thing now is that Capaldi is far more famous than he’s ever been before in his career, while still laughing that he is far younger than the Doctor actually is. (Remember, this man is thousands of years old.) While he did not turn up at Comic-Con, he and Jenna Coleman are going to have the rare opportunity moving forward to grace many sites around the world as a part of a massive world tour for the show. There’s never been anything done quite like this before at least with this show, and we’re definitely excited to see how all of this pans out in the coming weeks. (Of course, the same goes for the actual premiere of the show on August 23.)
