‘Doctor Who’ season 8 spoilers: Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman on more ‘alien’ doctor
When the new season of “Doctor Who” premieres on August 23, there is a side to the title character that you should very much expect to see: Fear. This guy is strange and legitimately scary, and therefore different than any other version of the character that we’ve seen on the show.
Speaking to Empire Magazine in a new interview, Peter Capaldi really emphasized that his version of the character should be viewed as an outsider much more than either the Matt Smith or David Tennant Doctors, largely due to the fact that he is so indifferent to their condition and lifestyle:
“He’s more alien than he’s been for a while … He doesn’t quite understand human beings or really care very much about their approval.”
Just to put the icing on the cake here, Jenna Coleman also further explained the sort of uncertainty that Clara Oswald is going to feel almost the entire time that she is around this character:
“With Matt’s Doctor [Clara] felt quite safe, really. She knew she’d be caught if she was in danger, but this guy is a lot less human-friendly and a lot less patient. He’s more removed and inaccessible. You can’t quite access him in the same way.”
For us, this level of uncertainty is exciting given that we haven’t quite seen it from a Doctor in quite a while. We’d almost been put into a safe place by some other iterations of this character over time. With this being said, we do fear for the characters a little bit given that Clara’s not going to have nearly as easy of a time.
