CBS tries to help Halle Berry’s ‘Extant’ with ‘Criminal Minds’ lead-in

CBS -So far, the summer has not been so kind to “Extant” in the same way that it was “Under the Dome” for CBS last year. If the ratings don’t start to go in a more positive direction, then it is certainly possible that this show could turn into “extinct” by the time September arrives.

The network announced this week that they are moving the Halle Berry series to 10:00 p.m. Eastern time on Wednesdays, which is at least the same hour that “Under the Dome” airs in. This way, it follows up on a repeat of “Criminal Minds” rather than a new episode of “Big Brother.”

What’s with the move? One theory here is that maybe CBS feels like there are more viewers around later at night during the summer, or maybe they believe that “Criminal Minds” serves as a better lead-in. While “Big Brother” gets better ratings than a repeat of a crime procedural, maybe it shares a more similar audience. “Big Brother” skews reasonably young, and we imagine that a good percentage of their viewers are sticking around to see what is coming up next on the network.

At the moment, we actually feel like both “Under the Dome” and “Extant” are in a little bit of trouble. You don’t just get good ratings anymore for being on network TV, and if you want to get a buildup of viewers over time, it has to be able to attract those seeking quality. We cannot say that either show is anywhere near as good as the offerings on cable or Netflix, so they are each therefore going to be in a little bit of trouble.
