NBC’s ‘Hannibal’ season 3 Comic-Con interview: Caroline Dhavernas on Alana Bloom’s return
The first thing that we should say about Alana Bloom on “Hannibal” season 3 is this: You will see her back on the show. The question is just how she will react and adapt from everything that happened to her in season 2. In between sleeping with Hannibal and all of the terrible things that happened in the finale, she basically had the worst handful of episodes ever. While she may be coming back, she’s definitely going to need to bounce back in a big way.
But what was it like for Caroline Dhavernas to come off of this second-season finale with so much ambiguity, not knowing what was going to happen with her character? We asked her this question at Comic-Con Thursday, and while she is still mostly in the dark about her story, you could still read the excitement from her as she speculated over Dr. Bloom’s future:
“I was excited. I have no idea what’s going to happen, but I know that she will be a changed woman because of what happened to her. She did not see it; she was so [close] to him. I think either she would give up and stop working, or want to continue on with a different way of working and approaching life, which I think is what we’re going to do.”
What we find so fascinating about Alana’s character is that there is probably more creative freedom with the source material with her than almost any other character on the show. Her role was already changed into a woman, so who cares about sticking this close to canon? We’ve already heard from executive producer Bryan Fuller that he has no mind changing the story from time to time based on actors that he loves working with. (This was in our chat with him yesterday about the return of Chilton.)
With Dhavernas returning, this basically means that by some awesome miracle, every person who appeared near death in the finale is actually live. Laurence Fishburne will be back in some capacity, as well, and we’ll have a little more on that later today when we post our interview with writer / executive producer Steve Lightfoot.
