‘MasterChef’ season 5, episode 9 review: The second Cutter is just as deep

Tonight, “MasterChef” brought us another episode that was funny, dramatic, and creative. Basically, it was everything that we wanted from the show and then some.

It was clear from the get-go, though, that this was going to be a very rough night for Elise. She had a panic attack during the first Mystery Box challenge, and things did not get a whole lot better for her later, when she basically had to force Gordon Ramsay to help her even finish. You know that she’s not destined to win this competition, but she is someone who is probably a good person.

While Christian won the salmon Mystery Box, he picked Joe Bastianich’s Italian-themed ingredients for everyone else to cook. Cutter was also deplorable for the second straight week, and his attitude is going to keep us making “First Cut is the Deepest” references every week until he ends up going home. The guy not only made an easy pizza during the challenge, but was cocky about it like he had just brought up something five-star.

Still, we can’t fault the judges for keeping them. Cutter may be unlikable, but he Elise was basically on the way out. Had Ramsay and company kept her after he bailed her out during the challenge, we know that there would have been controversy all about that. She is not someone really meant for this competition; we feel like she can go home, start a baking company, and probably do well in her local community with even a cookbook. She seems like a very nice person, and she can at least leave knowing that. Grade: B+.
