‘The Leftovers’ episode 5 preview: ‘Gladys,’ and Matt’s next move

If season 1 of “The Leftovers” has shown us anything so far, it is a relentless commitment to be one of the most grim series that we’ve seen on TV in a long time. Maybe since at least … “Lost”? For a guy who was so funny on Twitter, Damon Lindelof has quite a habit of crafting some depressing stories.

We do not have any indication that things are going to get much better at all on next week’s “Gladys.” The synopsis below suggests that Laurie’s life could somehow be getting worse soon, and Kevin has to make a big decision when it comes to letting other people assist him in the town:

Laurie’s resolve is put to the test in the wake of a brutal hate crime. After his latest initiatives to maintain the peace in Mapleton fall short, Kevin turns down an outside offer to rid the town of its problems. Matt brings his pulpit to the street. Meg takes on a new role.”

Will this episode bring answers? Probably not, and mostly because we’re starting to think that this show is not even considering that to be one of the most important things on the docket. Instead, they are merely more interested in telling unique stories about people, and the extent that darkness can enter their brains after unexplained mysteries. It’s going to be hard for there to ever be peace so long as this attitude continues to persist. That does mean more TV for us, but also more bad days for Kevin.
