‘True Blood’ season 7, episode 5 preview: The sad case of Alexander Skarsgard’s Eric
Mortality has always been a theme to a certain extent on “True Blood,” mostly in the sense of wondering what it is like to be immortal, and then looking at the end at almost more of a release than something terrible to try to run away from.
This is how Eric Northman felt going into the episode two weeks ago. This is a man who has lived past centuries of wars, plagues, and other mass genocides, and yet he is still there. He sees nothing of value left in this life, given that he never quite had that true love that lasted, and his only real companion has been Pam thanks to the time the two parties have spent together. There is a part of us that wishes that we could have seen even more of his past, but there is no time for that.
So going into these final episodes, we still feel like death is the likely endgame for Alexander Skarsgard’s character, even if we don’t want it to be so. Given his Hep-V diagnosis, what other possible end is there for him? All he wants is the chance to destroy Sarah Newlin, get his peace, and then try and move forward with what is left of his life. This is what is going to be at least one theme of tonight’s episode “Lost Cause” … though that title itself does not inspire a whole lot of optimism or hope that he is going to get just what he wants to out of this.
As you already know courtesy of this sneak peek, this episode will also feature Sookie Stackhouse continuing to spend more time with Bill Compton. It feels like these two are most likely endgame for the show, even though Sookie and Eric did have their moments at one point in the series’ run.
We’ll have a review of tonight’s “True Blood” later, so be sure to continue keeping an eye out for that.
