‘Last Comic Standing’ video: Our take on Alingon Mitra vs. Monroe Martin
Last night, NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” had what we may consider to be one of the greatest comedy showdowns that they have put on the air to date. Monroe Martin and Joe Machi were both so funny that we wanted to see the two of them both go through.
With Monroe gone, though, he now goes down into the Comic Comeback competition in hopes of making it back on the show for the finale, at least to deliver a new set of material. His opponent? Aligon Mitra, who has become the people’s champ and made it through three consecutive weeks.
The funny thing here is that once again, we’re torn. We feel like that if it comes down to these two particular sets, Alingon wins hands down. He’s shown us through these a style of humor that reminds us of some of our favorites like Chris Hardwick and Kumail Najiani right now; he’s quick, in touch with modern trends, and likes to play a little bit with the meta concept of humor. Monroe is a little more straightforward with his humor style, but also more personal.
This time, the problem here is that to us, Alingon’s bit about reality TV surpasses Monroe’s slightly-more-tired premise about how you get tired in relationships about a year or so into them. The reason that we’d still be tempted to vote for Monroe, though, is just because he made us laugh so many times during the season, and we’d say that overall we have found more enjoyable one-liners from his body of work. Then again, we could counter for another time by saying that Monroe has had way more opportunities to make us laugh. This is the pickle we find ourselves in at the moment.
