‘So You Think You Can Dance’ season 11: Is Rickey Ubeda officially the frontrunner?

Throughout the first several weeks of “So You Think You Can Dance,” it can be very difficult to figure out who is going to be the favorites. Some dancers are edited to the point where they receive little airtime, while you get wrapped up in the emotional stories of some others.

Therefore, we try on this series to not pick any top favorites until we get to the live rounds … but we are starting to think that Rickey Ubeda is the frontrunner to win the entire competition right now. This week, he came off of an extremely emotional performance that had tears, standing ovations, and more with another stirring number with new partner Valerie Rockey. Within two weeks, he has shown that he can dance effectively with different partners and with very different choreography. That’s a good sign that he will withstand the test of time and make it extremely deep in the competition.

With all of these great and much-deserved compliments being said, you probably should not hand him the crown and the title just yet. We’ve seen it happen on a few seasons in the past where someone makes it pretty far in the competition, and then has one bad performance that completely shakes their confidence the rest of the way. They are not able to fully recover, and then they end up going home after a few more stumbles. There is also the chance of a shock boot like we had with Chris Daughtry on “American Idol,” where everyone was so sure he was safe that they didn’t remember to vote.
