‘Ray Donovan’ season 2, episode 1 preview: A different sort of mission
Missing “Ray Donovan“? Well in a week’s time, you will have a chance to see the return of Liev Shreiber and the rest of the cast to Showtime for the start of the summer season. This is a show that thrives on scandal and complicated situations for its characters, and we have no reason to think that this is going to change at some point in the near future.
As a matter of fact, the first preview that we have for next Sunday’s premiere basically suggests that the family business of trying to sell one another out is going to be as active as ever. Ray has the task of trying to find and turn in his father Mickey within 24 hours, and while Mickey is an old guy who cannot really move too fast, he makes up for it in about a million other ways. He’s a near-invincible cockroach that blends in well, can con the living heck out of people, and someone manages to weasel his way out of situations.
The issue that is at the center of the show, and something that will really have to be explored over time if this is to ever be considered one of Showtime’s classics, is how long this cat and mouse game can go on for. Sooner or later, someone has to win, right? The longer Ray remains focused on Mickey and Mickey on Ray, the more than it precludes them from doing other things. As weird as it may say, this is one of the few cable series out there that we enjoy more for the procedural elements than anything else.
