‘Falling Skies’ season 4, episode 3 preview: Will Tom figure out an escape?

You can say many things about “Falling Skies,” but one that you feel like you have to say is that the show this season is really making sure that there is constantly plenty going on.

If you remember back to the early seasons, for example, one of the larger criticisms around the show was really that the stories contained a whole lot of nothing. There was frequent wandering from one place to the next, and it wasn’t until the final few episodes of the season where there started to be anything resembling progress taking place. That’s definitely not happening now.

Sunday night, Tom’s attempts to lead an escape will continue to be one of the larger storylines, though this is not going to come easy by any means. The same goes for developing some sort of trust with Lexi, who clearly has some knowledge about humanity and what the future might hold, but also plenty of secrets.

The show feels right now like it is almost facing a crossroads between a gritty story of survival like “The Walking Dead,” or something more of a space opera like “Battlestar Galactica” or “Firefly.” The first few seasons have been more like the former, but we are down with the transition to something that is a little more rooted in science fiction almost around the clock. This is the show that we were hoping would be on the air back when it first premiered, and so we’re thrilled that we have finally made it to that place now.
