‘Downton Abbey’ season 5 spoilers: Lesley Nicol on Christmas special, more
Even though the “Downton Abbey” Christmas special may not always be set at Christmastime for the characters, this has become one of the most important events of the entire year for the show. This is when we saw the end of Matthew Crawley, and last year we almost saw Mr. Bates’ life come completely apart.
So what could be taking place this year? Of course, we imagine that there will be some drama to a huge degree, mostly because that is a constant. However, there is always the possibility of something sad, tragic, or joyous happening, but you’ll have to wait for a while to find out.
Lesley Nicol made headlines recently when she claimed that nobody was going to die on this upcoming season, but in a chat on “Loose Women” she was much more subdued. Specifically, she was coy about the Christmas episode, before going into a chat about Richard E. Grant and his love of social media:
“We’re just beginning the Christmas special. I’m under strict orders, you know I am!
“Richard E. Grant was so nice, fantastic. I was thinking, ‘That’s a bit fancy isn’t it, having Richard E Grant!’ And before I could even think it he came up to Sophie, who plays Daisy, and said: ‘Do you mind frightfully if I have a picture?’ I was thinking: ‘I was thinking exactly the same but didn’t dare ask!’ So we got some rather good selfies with him.”
Ironically, there is an interesting connection between Grant and Nicol; Lesley made her comments about death, which she may have spoken too soon about given that Julian Fellowes said that he was still writing scenes when she said that. Meanwhile, Fellowes chided Grant for some pictures that he shared online. The man loves his secrets!
