‘Community’ season 6 official on Yahoo!; what does it mean?

The latest -Community” fans, the moment that you’ve been waiting for, but probably never seriously thought would be here given some of the hurdles the past several weeks, is here.

It was announced this week that the formerly-known-as-NBC-fan-favorite was picked up by Yahoo! for a sixth season, which may premiere as early as this fall. This is undoubtedly glorious news, and something that fans far and wide should celebrate with some fanfare.

What we do have for you now is this quite from creator Dan Harmon, who is most certainly in a mood to celebrate after locking in what is a series that seemed to be very well doomed after Hulu decided that they couldn’t make it work:

“I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo … I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!”

The easy assumption, given the show’s famous mantra “six seasons and a movie,” was that the show would last for exactly this long before taking a final bow. However, Yahoo! Chief Marketing official Kathy Savitt told Vulture recently that they may be interested in keeping the show around longer, and the company has the money in order to ensure that the budget will not change drastically from when it was on broadcast.

In the end, we’re mostly thrilled about this move, with our major point of concern simply being a lack of knowledge about Yahoo! as a streaming service. We’re familiar with them only because of “Burning Love,” and we haven’t quite thought of them as a major player in this world like we have with such other people like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime. We feel like “Community” should make its prophecy come true, but at the same time, we also feel like the series really needs to hit the road after that. We imagine that it will, given that after season 6 the studio in Sony would have to renegotiate creator Dan Harmon and all of the cast.

What is your reaction to the return of “Community,” and do you think it will be able to maintain its quality in this new venue? Let us know below! Also, take a look here at some of our other new stories courtesy of our CarterMatt Newsletter.
