‘The View’: Questions about that Barbara Walters interview?

The View -
“The View” is shifting gears in a HUGE way.

Sometimes, timing gets in the way of making an interview as interesting as it could be, and that was the case Friday night courtesy of the interview Barbara Walters gave on “The View.” The show hyped it up by saying that this was her first-ever appearance as a “guest,” and it was meant to promote her interview tonight with Peter Rodger, the father of Santa Barbara shooter Elliot Rodger.

So why was the departure of Jenny McCarthy and Sherri Shepherd not really addressed? It’s all because the interview was taped before the news was announced. Like many other long-running shows that air on network TV (think “The Late Show with David Letterman”), “The View” typically tapes its Friday shows early, and therefore they are at times a little less timely than their other ones during the week.

The only thing that was somewhat interesting from a hiring / firing perspective from this interview was that Barbara was quick to remind everyone that she still is an executive producer on the show; not only that, but she also referenced executive producer Bill Geddie in the wake of the next that he may also be heading out the door.

With McCarthy and Shepherd both out and Whoopi Goldberg seemingly the only remaining long-term panelist, there is a busy summer ahead for the show to try and find new people. We feel fairly confident that they will succeed, if for no other reason than that this is still one of the best platforms on daytime TV. The only thing going against them is that we’re in the age of the DVR and Netflix, and there are so many other options now for viewers during the day than people fighting over issues.
