‘Community’ season 6: Joel McHale looks at uncertain future
We adore “Community.” We also adore Joel McHale (save for that VGX gig that we’ll try to forget about), and we therefore want to see this reunion happen for at least one more season. We know that there are haters of season 5 who even enjoyed the first few seasons, but we attribute some of that to the classic internet rule of “if it’s older than three years, we automatically don’t like it anymore.” Season 5 still had wonderful moments and great episodes, and we feel there could still be another great year left in the tank.
Unfortunately, all of the actors are left walking on eggshells for the next week until contracts expire to find out if there is a second life, and that includes Joel. The interview he gave to IGN recently was before the news broke that the show would most likely not be returning to Hulu, but the commentary is still relevant here in terms of the difficult process that comes with getting something made:
“You always have to be pessimistic about anything in entertainment … I shoot tons of stuff, I’ve shot pilots and commercials. Not until you see yourself looking back at you on television is it actually happening.
“We’re not swinging hammers and we’re not in the army, which are real jobs that are super-hard to do, but you still have to have a tough skin for failure, and [in entertainment] for something to get made and for something to be put out is a difficult thing. So, I would say there is a chance. It’s been reported … But I don’t know yet. I’ve been hoping, and we got to know soon since our contracts expire.
“I’d love for it to happen, since if it goes to the internet Dan [Harmon] unencumbered will be a force to be reckoned with. I think it’d be really fun…”
We do now feel somewhat pessimistic about the show’s future, and maybe a part of that is setting up for a fall while another part of that is a cold look at reality. With the Hulu deal likely dead there is only a mystery suitor supposedly out there for Sony Pictures TV, who is at least not giving up without a fight on a property.
Regardless of what happens, you can at least take some solace in the news that the end of “Community” is coming, one way or another, very soon. There will not be that much more of a wait until the truth comes out. So stay with us, and if you want some further news and updates on all we cover, sign up today for our CarterMatt Newsletter.
