TV Quick Hits: Diane Sawyer leaving, ‘Gotham’ talk, ‘Girls’ season 4 scoop

Diane Sawyer checks out – We begin with the big news coming in from ABC News, which is that they are going to brace for a change with their broadcast.

On September 2, Diane Sawyer will no longer be the lead anchor of ABC World News tonight, with the position going to 40-year old David Muir, known for his work on weekend broadcasts in addition to “20/20.” In keeping things in the family, there will not be a whole lot of change when it comes to the series for a while. George Stephanopoulos, meanwhile, while be the chief anchor across all of ABC, and therefore will have priority coverage of most major events. This is a somewhat unusual relationship, given that typically the evening news anchor has this position rather than one of the co-hosts for “Good Morning America.”

As for other news…

“Gotham” scoop – Could Mr. Freeze end up gracing the series at some point? This is certainly possible, at least based on what pilot director Danny Cannon told HitFix:

“I have a big pitch with Bruno about the Mr. Freeze character, whose origins are uncertain … If I can win [executive producer] Geoff Johns over and if I can win [creator Bruno Heller] over, then I look forward to the moment where that character can be realized.”

This is what we worry about when it comes to “Gotham.” If you continue to get on board so many villains now, how old will these people when Batman is an adult? Unless you are bringing in kid villains, you would have to imagine the Bat someday fighting senior citizens. Not exactly terrifying.

“Girls” news – Lena Dunham must be a fan of “Orange Is the New Black,” given that Natasha Lyonne has just been cast, per TVLine, in one episode of season 4. All that has been confirmed for now is that she will be playing a character named Rickey.
